There's multi-billion dollar market in the U.S. for life and health coaching. Many Americans are looking for alternatives to traditional mental health care. But unlike therapy, coaching is unregulated.
Health “coaching” alone is a $7.6 billion market in the United States, linked to the wellness and lifestyle medicine industries, as well as social media influencer culture. With ongoing shortages of physicians and mental health workers, many Americans see coaches as a more personalized alternative to traditional physical and mental health care. There’s a common stereotype that coaching is for “high-functioning” people and is oriented toward the future, while therapy is focused on the past and finding problems with people. As a licensed, practicing therapist, I think this could not be further from the truth. Therapists focus on helping a person process their past, focus on the present and work toward goals in the future. Finally, life coaching relies heavily on positive psychology, which focuses on personal strengths and positive traits for happiness – in short, to look on the bright side and not focus on the negatives. Since its founding, positive psychology has come under scrutiny for debunked scientific claims of the therapy’s success. Is someone telling you that they can cure you or that they have a product that can fix your problem – a meal plan, diet, coaching course, etc.? Do they have research and evidence, not just anecdotes, to back up the claims they are making? If something is being touted as “tested” or “proven,” make sure you ask about the data. Is the person touting their service as the “only” way to get better?
Rolovich had coached in high school and the XFL during his time away from college football.
Since being dismissed by WSU, Rolovich coached as a volunteer at San Marin High School in Novato, California and was hired as the offensive coordinator for the Seattle Sea Dragons of the XFL before the team was shuttered in a merger with the USFL.Rolovich, a Bay Area native, is the second former FBS head coach to join Wilcox's staff at Cal. Earlier this week, former Auburn and Boise State coach Bryan Harsin was hired as the Bears' offensive coordinator.Nick Rolovich coached four seasons at Hawaii, with the Rainbow Warriors going to the Mountain West Conference championship game in 2019.After a three-year absence, Nick Rolovich has returned to college football coaching.
Three new Power Four jobs opened after the regular season ended
As of Dec. 2, four of the 20 jobs have been filled. Temple poached Sam Houston coach K.C. Keeler, a two-time FCS national champion. Kennesaw State looked to the NFL, hiring Jaguars running backs coach and former Tennessee and Rice assistant Jerry Mack. East Carolina opted to go internal and retained interim coach and defensive coordinator Blake Harrell after he led a four-game winning streak.Rice looked to the FCS ranks and hired successful Davidson coach Scott Abell, who led the Wildcats to the FCS playoffs three times in the last five years, the first three postseason appearances in program history. In the last year alone, multiple sitting coaches have left positions in the Sun Belt or MAC to become position coaches at Power Four schools. For those hoping to someday become coaches in the SEC, a power conference coordinator job might be the easier path than winning big on a smaller stage. The types of candidates these jobs can court ultimately play a significant role in the carousel. Just last year, Tulane poached highly successful Troy coach Jon Sumrall. UTEP hired Scotty Walden from the FCS ranks.
